game review: turbo golf racing

better than rocket league?

Turbo Golf Racing offers casual, fun and competitive dynamics to players wrapped up in a mario-kart-style race to see who can put the ball in the hole first.

With the simple goal of hitting a ball into a hole, it doesn’t sound complicated at all, does it? Well that’s where the fun comes in!

To begin with, the courses or race tracks that you play are insanely challenging and take some time to master. There are 36 different tracks in the GAME PREVIEW release, with many more to come I’m sure.

Each track is unique in structure, but the elements that make up each course are the same throughout. There are sand bunkers and long grass patches that slow your ball and car down. Trees and rocks can block your way too. Just like real golf the ideal line is down the fairway to keep your speed up.

Help can be found along the way from collecting items by running your ball or car through them. Energy cells to restore your boost bar, shields to give you temporary immunity from rockets, and the rockets can be shot like a homing missile to your enemies!

If that didn’t sound like enough to keep you on your toes, driving the car is the hardest part to master. With speed as your counterpart, trying to keep forward momentum while dodging and directing a ball is way more of a challenge than you would think.

Apart from the colorful gameplay, there is a surprising amount of additional content in the GAME PREVIEW release. A free season 0 pass unlocks cosmetics and in game currency. In game currency is also earned after completing each race and can be spent in the shop tab where the items rotate daily.

The cosmetics are ridiculously cool, and it's honestly my favorite part of the game. So far my favorites are the frying pans with eggs as shields and an ice cream truck skin for the car, so cool (literally)!

The ball can also be customized with a range of skins, the developers put so much love into crafting these items, you can tell they really care about the game.

Along with cosmetic items, the core system gives your car access to unique abilities which are unlocked through completing challenges. There are so many to choose from and selecting the correct combination to suit your driving style can definitely give you an edge over the competition.

Making waves in the Xbox Game Pass, released on August 4th 2022, the game is currently in BETA or GAME PREVIEW, with hopes for some cross platform updates in the future for PlayStation 4 & 5.

In an era of high performance PC’s and next-generation consoles ready to handle “tera-flops” of data or whatever, it is great to see small games like this and Fall Guys do so well!

It goes to show that solid creative concepts and gameplay are still fundamental to successful games.
